LEG CRAMPS IN PREGNANCY
This phenomena of leg cramps in pregnancy is very common during pregnancy particularly in the third trimester. Nearly 50% of pregnant women suffer with this cramping more frequently. These painful spasms that radiate through the calves and up the leg is very common. These cramps can be felt at the day but are more frequent and noticeable at night.
The major causes for leg cramps in pregnancy :
As the body during pregnancy undergoes number of changes which increases the chances of experiencing leg
cramps. One can experience it if the body has shortage of nutrients and also the salts in the blood. It may be caused by the additional weight gain of pregnancy and even changes in the circulation. The pressure from the growing foetus is placed on the nerves and blood vessels that go to the legs. The pressure and pinching may be the major cause for the leg cramps. Diet and excess of phosphorous and shortage of calcium or magnesium also a cause for these cramps.
Prevention of leg cramps in pregnancy :
While theses leg cramps during pregnancy aren’t
exactly preventable but there are few steps that can
minimize the duration and frequency.
~ Regular exercise and stretches that target the calves.
~ Wearing supportive stockings.
~ Massaging calves and feet.
~ Don’t stand or sit with the legs crossed for long period of
~ Take a walk everyday.
~ Drink water regularly and stay hydrated.
~ Take a warm bath before going to bed for relaxation of
muscles and it also helps to open up blood vessels and
improves the circulation to the legs.
~ Taking proper amounts of supplements to ensure the
body with nutrients and salts.
If the pain is very severe and persistent and if swelling is observed then medical attention is mandatory.
